Project Management and The Human Resource
Most project managers in industry have a technical education and are good technically at what they do. Since they are good technically, management feel they will be good as project managers, but this not necessarily so. Sure, they can figure out how to scope, schedule, and budget but, they fall down when it comes to the management of the human resource.
People Are Complicated?
Your job as a project manager becomes more complex when you have to think about the happiness of the team. Not only do you have to know when they are unhappy, you have to know what might make them unhappy. For one thing, humans are irrational and prone to habit. When those habits are interrupted, interesting things happen and habits can be particularly troublesome for project managers. People are also emotional, and it turns out an unhappy team member can be trouble. There could be a change in a team member’s take-home pay, a life event like a death in the family or divorce, or something as subtle as changing hours of work. In other words, project management grows considerably more complex when you actually have to think about the happiness of the team members. The project management process and procedures are simple, it is the human resource that is complicated.
Who’s Emotional?
All humans have the six emotions of: anger, disgust, fear, happiness, sadness and surprise. To be successful as a project manager you have to have the right behaviours to manage these emotions within the team in order to get the team to work with you. You have to realize that it is the human resource that is between you and project success. Unfortunately, the skills for success in project management are not those in which most professionals have been trained. This is a skill set you have to pick up and develop.
So, What Are They?
I know you are wondering, what are those skills and what do I have to do? Well, we’re here to help, as our “Fundamentals Of Project Management” workshop covers the 13 behaviours you, as a project manager, need to understand and develop in order to direct your team to project success.
So, if you want to find out how to scope, schedule, budget and what behaviours you have to develop and improve upon, then join us at one of our workshops at the following locations:
