Many organizations struggle with understanding where they should invest their time and money when it comes to improving project delivery excellence. Will more training for project managers make the difference and, if so, in what topics? Or, should we invest in updates to our project management processes and templates? Will new project management tools make a difference? Or are there other opportunities we are missing altogether?
The IPMA Delta® certification involves a detailed assessment that looks at key areas related to project delivery excellence and provides valuable feedback to stakeholders who are responsible for the project, programme and portfolio management of an organization. The assessment examines three key areas:
- Assessors examine an organization's structure, processes, and policies to see how it governs initiatives comparing it to IPMA's Organizational Competence Baseline (OCB) — a global standard for measuring organizational PM maturity.
- One or more sample projects or programmes are assessed to determine how well they are being individually managed, compared to IPMA's Project Excellence Baseline (PEB) — a standard for measuring project management excellence.
- The knowledge and competence of the organization's project leaders are assessed against IPMA's Individual Competence Baseline (ICB) — a standard for measuring an individual's knowledge and skills as a project manager.
The results of the three assessments are combined to produce a report highlighting how an organization is positioned against international standards of project delivery excellence: what the organization is doing well and, more importantly, what areas it needs to improve upon to increase its level of PM maturity, including specific topics of skills development for its project leaders, recommended PM process changes, project governance changes, and other suggestions to improve an organization's PM capabilities and readiness to face tomorrow's challenging projects.
Organizations use the information in these reports to demonstrate their PM excellence to clients, plan training, identify process improvement opportunities and other transformation initiatives, and bench mark themselves against their peers.
